What the results mean
Four recommended next steps.
- Build
- Strong opportunity and the foundations to deliver it. Move to production work.
- Pilot
- Worth testing with a small, time-boxed pilot before committing to a full build.
- Prepare
- Fix the foundations first, so a later AI build does not stall.
- Monitor
- AI is not a priority here yet. Watch competitors and check again in six months.
How the step is chosen
Opportunity and readiness together set the step. High risk moves a company down one step.
How the score works
Every weight and rule, in the open.
Eight areas
Strategy
A clear, funded reason to use AI.
Data
Usable data the company is allowed to use.
Technology
A product that can take an AI feature safely.
Team and delivery
People who can build it and a record of shipping.
AI in use today
Real experience of running AI and checking it.
Opportunity
How much AI could be worth to this business.
Risk exposure
How much could go wrong. Higher means more exposed.
Safeguards
Rules and checks that keep the risk in hand.
Light: counts towards readiness. Dark: sets opportunity and risk.

Rules
- 01
Each answer is scored 0 to 4, then each area is converted to a score out of 100.
- 02
Readiness is a weighted average of five areas. The weights change with company stage.
- 03
If data or team scores below 25, readiness is capped at 50. A strong plan cannot make up for missing foundations.
- 04
Opportunity and risk exposure are rated High (70 and above), Medium (40 to 69) or Low (below 40).
- 05
Risk is only rated High when exposure is high and safeguards are weak. Good safeguards bring it down.
- 06
"Not sure" counts as a cautious answer and lowers the confidence rating.
Limits
- Scores are only as good as the answers. Answering on behalf of a company you do not run adds guesswork.
- Treat the results as a consistent starting point for conversations with founders, not an audit.
- There is no benchmark against other funds. We will only add one when we have real data to support it.

Questions
Common questions.
- Who is this tool for?
- Venture capital partners, platform teams and accelerator managers who want a quick, consistent view of which portfolio companies are ready to use AI well.
- Do I need to name my companies?
- No. Code names such as Company A work just as well. Your answers are saved only in your own browser, and nothing is sent to us.
- What if I do not know an answer?
- Choose "Not sure". The tool assumes a cautious answer, lowers the confidence rating and tells you what to check with the founder.
- Can I share the results?
- Yes. Use "Save as PDF" on the results page to download a copy for your partners or investment committee.
